Steinunn María Þormar

Soprano and Cellist

Steinunn María Þormar (f. 2000) is a cellist and soprano. She began cello studies with Sigurður Bjarki Gunnarsson and in the spring of 2012, she gained admission to the Reykjavik College of Music (now the High School of Music). There, she began studying under Sigurgeir Agnarsson. Shortly after begining at the Reykjavik College of Music, Steinunn started taking singing lessons with Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir, and ever since, she has been studying both singing and cello simultaneously. In the spring of 2020, she completed her Advanced levels in both cello performance and solo singing, and a year later, she completed her departure recital. Currently, she is studying classical singing at the Iceland Academy of the Arts under Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir, Dísella Lárusdóttir, and Kristinn Sigmundsson, as well as continuing her cello studies with Sigurgeir Agnarsson.

Steinunn has participated in several student operas, most recently as the First Lady in 'The Magic Flute' performed at the Iceland University of the Arts. She has also been involved in chamber groups, premiering works by her peers, and performing in pop and rock bands. Steinunn is one of the founders of the chamber group Stundarómur, which performed concerts last summer in Iceland and Norway.
